Information about Math 20095, ST: Algebraic Thinking (currently in pilot stage)
Who: Students who would normally register for MATH 10675
What: A 2-credit hour course, focusing on concepts and skills needed to succeed in Math 10775. Emphasis on problem-solving strategies, review of algebra skills, and modeling. Includes study skills training and a growth mindset approach. Students who successfully complete this 2-credit hour course with a grade of C or better should register for Math 10775 the following semester.
When: Fall semester 2024 will be the third semester the course is offered. The Math Department ran a pilot during Fall 2023 semester and will investigate success rates of the Algebraic Thinking graduates in Math 10075 during Spring 2024 semester.
Where: Kent campus.
Why: The Math Department has been concerned about the low success rates in Math 10675 and is trying to better meet the needs of struggling statistics students.

Information about Math 20095, Statistical Thinking
Who: Students who would normally register for MATH 10040.
What: A 2-credit hour course, focusing on concepts and skills needed to succeed in Math 10041. Emphasis on intuitive development of statistical concepts and review of skills needed to succeed in Math 10041. Includes study skills training and a growth mindset approach. Students who successfully complete this 2-credit hour course with a grade of C or better should register for Math 10041 the following semester.
When: Fall semester 2024 will be the second year the course is offered. The Math Department ran a pilot during Fall 2022 semester and will investigate success rates of the Statistical Thinking graduates in Math 10041 during Spring 2024 semester.
Where: Kent and Ashtabula campuses.
Why: The Math Department has been concerned about the low success rates in Math 10040 and is trying to better meet the needs of struggling statistics students.
Time Limits: The ACT, SAT, ALEKS Placement Assessment and Accuplacer scores are acceptable for placement purposes for two years from the date of the assessment. The Banner system will allow students to register for a Math class if the score is older than two years, but the Department of Mathematical Sciences advises against this. The HS GPA does not expire.
Students who score between 45-54% or 55-66% on ALEKS and have an overall HS GPA below 3.5 may retake the ALEKS placement assessment in a proctored environment. If they score in the same placement range, they may register for the highest-level Mathematics course in that placement band. Example: A student with a 45% ALEKS score and a HS GPA lower than 3.5 places into Math 10675, 10771 or 10772. If they score 46% on their second (proctored) assessment, they may register for Math 10775, 11009, or 14001.
** Students desiring to take a course other than MATH 10041, MATH 10051, or MATH 11008 must take the ALEKS assessment.
- Once you have completed the ALEKS® placement assessment your score will immediately be visible
- If you want to view your score at a later date after the placement assessment you can do this by logging into FlashLine and selecting the ALEKS® Math Placement. Once you are in ALEKS®, click the assessment button and your score will appear. Also, your score is also automatically added to your Â鶹ÊÓƵ student profile which is accessible by your adviser one day after you have completed the assessment
- You may improve your score by completing a six week ALEKS® learning module, then registering for a reassessment. This is the only way to change your placement to a different mathematics course. Students who score at least 80% mastery in their Learning Module have an excellent chance of improving their placement on an ALEKS® reassessment.
