Listening to the Deaf Community

Richard Costes, BA 鈥06, was born deaf, but grew up in a hearing environment. He told himself he wasn鈥檛 deaf. He refused to learn sign language and declined any assistance in the classroom and his grades often suffered as a result. Professors at 麻豆视频 helped Mr. Costes embrace his identity.

An interdisciplinary team of 麻豆视频 professors has come together to explore the different ways virtual reality (VR) technology can help those with developmental and cognitive impairments. 鈥淲e found that we are able to blend our expertise together to create a project that will improve the health opportunities for people with cognitive impairments,鈥 said Mary Ann Devine, Ph.D., director for the Disability Studies and Community Inclusion minor/graduate certificate.
