PEP and PrEP are medications that can prevent HIV. When taken as directed both are highly effective at preventing HIV. Is PEP or PrEP right for you?
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
- Taken after a single high-risk exposure to HIV
- Must be started as soon as possible - always within 72 hours of a possible exposure
- Prescribed a 28-day course of 3 antiretroviral medications
- Baseline screenings will be needed for initiating PEP
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
- Medication taken by people that are at ongoing risk for getting HIV from sex or injection drug use
- Reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% when taken as prescribed
- Baseline HIV test needed before taking PrEP
