Scholar Contributes to Podiatric Medicine Education

Scholar of the Month
Lawrence Osher
Professor
College of Podiatric Medicine
1982-present

An accomplished doctor and academic, a highly regarded colleague and educator, the June 2016 Scholar of the Month is Dr. Lawrence Osher of Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s College of Podiatric Medicine, a decision made unanimously among the college’s leadership.

Osher is a professor in the Division of Podiatric and General Medicine at the College of Podiatric Medicine. Osher completed his undergraduate education with a Bachelor of Science from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, before earning his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) degree from the former Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, now Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s College of Podiatric Medicine.

Osher has acted as the scientific co-chair for several continuing medical education conferences, including the 2015 Southeast National Conference and the 2015 Southern Exposure Seminar.

He is also the director of the Radiology Department at the Cleveland Foot and Ankle Clinic in Cleveland and the chairman of the Ohio Radiation Generating Equipment Committee. These are fitting placements, as Osher is well-known for his project studying fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) scanning versus fluorine labeled white blood cells in PET scanning of infected versus non-infected diabetic Charcot arthropathy. He started the project with D. Scot Malay, D.P.M., as part of a multicenter study.

He also received the 2003 Bronze William J. Stickel Research Award for research publication with the Journal of Podiatric Medical Association and has authored more than 25 refereed journal publications and book chapters.

He is not only esteemed by his colleagues in the field of podiatric medicine, but well-regarded among the Â鶹ÊÓƵ community at large.

Osher was selected to the 2012-13 Strategic Planning Committee for Academic Excellence and Innovation, as one of 32 members from more than 170 universitywide nominations, and the only nominee from Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s College of Podiatric Medicine. He also has been chairman of the college’s Faculty Senate since 2009.

Students favor him as well. In 2011, Osher was voted the Favorite Clinical Science Faculty Professor. He also received the 2009 Ohio Magazine “Outstanding Educator Award.â€

Faculty Profile

About Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Scholar of the Month

Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Scholar of the Month recognizes faculty researchers and scholars whose recent work has had an important impact on their professional fields and has brought exposure to the university. Each month, a different college will have the opportunity to nominate a researcher/scholar for this recognition. There is also a month when a faculty member from the Regional Campuses will be featured.

The selection process is in the hands of the dean and his or her colleagues and faculty. Hence, this is recognition by the person’s college colleagues that is then taken up by the university. The deans communicate the person’s name to the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs for recognition as Scholar of the Month.
