Planned Course FAQs
Planned Course FAQs
- What if the course I want to take as a planned course has a pre-requisite?
The course at the host institution may have pre-requisites which must be met prior to enrolling in the course. The host institution may require you to demonstrate your eligibility to enroll in the course. To ensure you are able to enroll in the planned course(s), you should:
Secure a copy of the course description/syllabus from the host institution either by accessing the on-line catalog or calling the Registrar or academic unit where the coursework is housed and check for any pre-requisites. Review your academic history to check for completed/in-progress work that is equivalent for any pre-requisites courses. Verify the pre-requisite equivalency by using or contacting the host institution鈥檚 Registrar, Transfer Center or academic unit offering the course(s). When you apply to the other institution (commonly called "transient" admission), submit a copy of your completed/approved Transfer Course Planning Form and an official copy of your 麻豆视频 transcript so that you can verify permission to enroll and that you have the pre-requisite requirements. If you do not have the pre-requisite, ask the sending institution, in advance if you will be permitted to register for the course and what steps to take to secure that permission. Get it in writing and know with whom you spoke and when. Please be advised that students seeking to take math, science, math based courses or foreign language may be required to take a placement assessment at the host institution prior to enrolling. Based on the results, registration in the approved course may not be permitted. Before taking the course(s) suggested by the results of the placement if different from the approval form, consult your academic advisor who may:- Update your Transfer Course Planning form to approve the courses based on the assessment.
- Update your Transfer Course Planning form to approve alternative courses.
- Encourage you not to pursue any planned coursework at the present time.
- Can I take pre-college level (a.k.a. remedial or developmental) coursework as a planned course?
Pre-college level coursework can be taken as transfer work. However, the host institution may require a placement assessment before enrolling in the remedial coursework. Also, you should be sure that the remedial coursework aligns with KSU pre-college level work. Be advised that pre-college level coursework does not transfer to your student record. You should also check with financial aid to verify that your ad hoc agreement will cover this coursework. - If Pre-college coursework does not transfer, why would a student take it as a transfer course?
It may be less expensive at a community college or a college where you can pay in state tuition. In order to prepare for college level courses for the following semester and get/remain on track to graduation. It may be easier to grasp the material in a smaller classroom or as the only course(s) being taken. - What should I do if the course I want to take is not offered/full or I don鈥檛 have the pre-requisite?
Call/email your advisor who may:- Update your Transfer Course Planning form to approve the courses based on the assessment.
- Update your Transfer Course Planning form to approve alternative courses.
- Encourage you not to pursue any planned coursework at the present time.
- What if I place into a higher course than what was approved on my Transfer Course Planning form?
Prior to enrolling in the course, contact your advisor to see if taking the higher course will still apply to your program and/or be beneficial to your academic progress. If so, your advisor should update your Transfer Course Planning form to reflect the new coursework. - What if the equivalency on my approval form changes before I complete my course(s)?
If you had the appropriate approvals prior to enrolling in the planned course, the equivalency will be honored. If you take a course that already has an established equivalency, but the advisor has approved it to meet a different requirement, your advisor will need to complete a GPS program adjustment after the credit has been applied to your academic record. - What if I am no longer in academic good standing at the end of the term prior to completing my planned coursework?
Meet with your academic advisor to discuss your options and make a plan for getting back into academic good standing. You may, however, may no longer be eligible to pursue the planned coursework. - What if I enroll in a transfer course without completing the approval form or take courses other than on the form?
Contact your academic advisor to determine if the course(s) meet your program/elective/Kent Core requirements. Upon review of your eligibility for taking planned coursework and the applicability of the course taken, an advisor may retroactively complete the Transfer Course Planning form. However, your advisor is under no obligation to do so. Also, SFA is under no obligation to retroactively approve an ad-hoc consortium agreement to cover the tuition. - Am I required to have my transcript from the other institution forwarded to KSU if I don鈥檛 want the coursework posted or if I didn鈥檛 pass the course?
KSU students enrolled outside of 麻豆视频 (commonly known as "transient" students) are reported to the National Student Clearinghouse and are also included in enrollment data submitted to the Ohio Board of Regents if you are attending a public Ohio institution. Failure to submit a transcript could result in being cited for academic dishonesty. Students who do not have transcripts forwarded to 麻豆视频 will be sent a reminder communication to do so. - Is there SFA available? Where can I find my consortium agreement?
Students who want to use their 麻豆视频 financial aid to cover the tuition at the host institution must complete an Ad Hoc Consortium agreement form which can be located at on the Financial Aid Forms & Applications page. You will also need to submit a copy of the completed Transfer Course Planning form and schedule from the host institution to Student Financial Aid. Please be advised that the Ad Hoc Consortium agreement is not additional aid. You should meet with a financial aid counselor to discuss how your award will be disbursed for the academic year. - What if the planned course has a minimum grade for my major?
Students must earn a minimum grade of 鈥淒鈥 in order to transfer a course back to 麻豆视频. Also, grades do not transfer, only the credit hours associated with the courses. Many majors have minimum grades for certain courses within their program requirements. If a course requires a 鈥淐鈥 for the major, then you must earn a 鈥淐鈥 in order for the transferred course to be applied to the major. - Can I use transfer coursework to recalculate my KSU GPA?
Grades do not transfer. In order to have your GPA recalculated, coursework must be re-taken at any of the 麻豆视频 campuses where the course is offered. A Transfer Course Planning form will not be required to take a course at a 麻豆视频 campus other than where you normally attend. - What should I do if the format/method of instruction of my course changed during the time I was enrolled in it?
Make sure to confirm the "method of instruction" for the course you plan to take with your Academic Advisor/Education Abroad Advisor. Ensure that you keep in communication with the Education Abroad Office, Student Financial Aid, and your Academic Advisor to ensure that you are meeting the requirements for your program. Communicate any changes to the method of instruction that may occur while taking your course as soon as possible. Any changes to the format of the course could affect the prior evaluation of the course, and it is imperative that you check in with your advisor any time that there are updates to a course you are taking. - I was admitted as a freshman but I took a course at another college before starting at 麻豆视频. Is this transfer or planned work?
Planned work is reserved for students who have established an academic record at 麻豆视频. You should contact the admitting unit to have your admission status changed to 鈥淭ransfer Student鈥 and have your official transcript forwarded. You will not be charged any additional application fees or the Transfer Enrollment fee if you have already paid the Freshman Matriculation fee. You will not be required to attend TKS if you have already attended /registered for Destination Kent.
