“The thing I like the most about Communication Studies is that it prepares you for just about every career after graduation."

Mia Barnes is a Communication Studies major who is using what she’s learning in the classroom to advocate and participate in experiences that she is passionate about.

While serving as the Senator for the College of Communication and Information on 鶹Ƶ’s Undergraduate Student Government, Mia is leading in advocating for positive changes in the college which gives her the opportunity to practice both public speaking and advocacy. She currently works as an intern at Let’s Grow Together, a non-profit organization. She develops social media and web content and helps boost community engagement. Mia also works as a writer for Uhuru Magazine, one of CCI’s student media outlets, where she develops written content. She is also involved as a Community Partner Advocate with Community Engaged Learning, and is an ambassador for University College.

After graduation, she is looking forward to getting her certificate in paralegal studies and attending law school. She hopes to use all these experiences to turn her passion for giving back to the community into her profession.

“The thing I like the most about Communication Studies is that it prepares you for just about every career after graduation. Many people do not understand that communication skills are one of the top skills employers look for during the hiring process.”

One of Mia’s favorite classes she’s taken so far is Gender and Communication.

“We had controversial but much needed conversations,” she said.
