The Neurocognitive Collaboratory will soon be equipped with a fully Integrated Artinis Brite FNIRS EEG System plus a wearable TMSi Saga EEG system.

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) relies mainly on the relative transparency of tissue to light in the NIR range, and the oxygenation-dependent light-absorbing characteristics of hemoglobin. By using several different wavelengths, the relative changes in hemoglobin concentration can be displayed continuously. fNIRS stands for 鈥渇unctional near infrared spectroscopy鈥. The functional component comes from the fact that fNIRS devices can assess brain activity.

Brite is a portable, user-friendly comfortable multi-channel NIRS system. This device comes with a full headcap (of several different sizes) which can accommodate different head sizes (adult and pediatric) as well as different hair types/thicknesses.

The Fully Integrated FNIRS-EEG combined system will allow for simultaneous measurement of electrical potentials in brain tissue and changes in brain tissue oxygenation and blood volume.  It includes up to 18 fNIRS channels and 32 EEG channels without interference. The combination of EEG and NIRS gives one the ability to measure both neural and hemodynamic activity simultaneously, providing complementary information about brain function.

EEG measures the electromagnetic field created when neurons in the brain fire. With fNIRS, you measure the hemodynamic response, which is the adjustment of oxygen in the blood when a brain region is active. By combining EEG and fNIRS, you are provided with a complete picture of brain activity: activation of neurons and the energy demand of neurons. Moreover, EEG and NIRS have complementary spatial and temporal resolution. While EEG is a spatially imprecise recording technique due to volume conduction, meaning that even activation several centimeters away is recorded by electrodes, NIRS measures very precisely right under the location of the sensors.
