First snow, Kent Campus Dec. 2024

The first significant snowfall of the season blanketed Â鶹ÊÓƵ's campuses last week.

Increased activity in the sun's solar winds and the earth's magnetic field has produced appearances by the northern lights  in regions where they are not typically visible - like the skies above the Kent Campus. A Â鶹ÊÓƵ photographer captured spectacular images of the display.

Research into the air masses that drive changes in our day-to-day weather has been limited by land-based and regional studies, leaving wide gaps in our understanding of these impactful phenomena. A new paper by a Â鶹ÊÓƵ geographer has just filled in most of those gaps.
