Sydney Spires

  • Marketing Supervisor and Operations Supervisor
  • Junior
  • Marketing Major

Sydney Spires is a junior Marketing Major at Â鶹ÊÓƵ. She works in operations and as the marketing supervisor in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC).

Sydney said that Â鶹ÊÓƵ (KSU)  really fit her needs in what she was looking for in a school. As for coming to work in SWRC, she said the rec center was a convenient location for her, and that she thought it would be a good place to meet new friends as a freshman. She said she was able to develop leadership skills in Operations and that her role as supervisor was a great way to learn how to lead. “As a supervisor you are the person people come to with any problems or issues, you have to be able to think on your feet and act quickly. You have to lead your staff to ensure everything is going smoothly and I have learned a lot about what being a leader entails.â€

Sydney began working in Operations but would pick up a role in marketing. She said that she enjoyed how much her job connected to her major, without all the stress of an internship. “My major is marketing so they tie into each other pretty seamlessly. I have learned a lot about the side of marketing that can’t necessarily be taught in a classroom and that has been very beneficial to me.â€

Sydney said she didn’t realize some of the professional opportunities she could get working at the SRWC. She said she has really come to appreciate the working atmosphere, since she can work on her professional development while still being laid back. Sydney said that as she continued to work in SRWC, she realized how some of the skills she gained from working could align with career goals. “One of my professional goals is to become a chief marketing officer for an entertainment company. Having the leadership skills that I gained though working in operations has helped me learn how to lead a staff which will be important. In my marketing role, it will hopefully set me up to have the experience to get an entry level job at a firm to get my foot in the door.â€

Sydney said the SRWC provides a welcoming and opening environment for her. She can freely work with her friends while still furthering herself and her career. “I love the environment here. I have met some of my best friends through working here and I feel very thankful that I get to work with them everyday.â€
