Preston Mitchum, class of 2008

#15 in RizeUp's "50 Trendsetters to Watch"

Preston Mitchum graduated from KSU in 2008 with a major in Political Science and minor in Pan-African Studies. He was a student leader on campus, active in student organizations, and outspoken in the classroom. Preston was recently named for his activism and advocacy for marginalized communities.

After graduating from Kent, Preston went to the North Carolina Central University School of Law and then to the Washington College of Law at American University in D.C. He holds an LL.M. in Law and Government.

Preston is a strong advocate for the rights of marginalized populations. Previously a policy analyst for the Center for American Progress, he is currently a Policy Research Analyst at the Center for Health and Gender Equity. He is also an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, where he challenges students in Advanced Legal Research and Writing.

Preston is an avid activist and writer, relentlessly giving voice to people so often dismissed from, rejected by, or oppressed by mainstream discourse. He focuses his efforts as an outspoken feminist on the rights of women, the LGBTQ community, and People of Color. Importantly, he consistently brings attention to the intersectional dynamics of marginalization. His articles appear across a range of outlets, including The Root, Role Reboot, HuffPost Queer Voices, HuffPost Black Voices, The Grio, and The Atlantic. Many congratulations to Preston for his on-going success, and his many contributions.
