What Is Project Management?
Project management is the process in which an individual applies their knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to various projects while meeting the project’s requirements. Below is the general process of project management:

  1. Initiating
  2. Planning
  3. Executing
  4. Monitoring and controlling
  5. Closing

While a project manager is executing these steps, they are paying close attention to the project timeline and using the appropriate resources in order to achieve their goals. Each project that the project manager oversees is unique in its own way, because of its individual timeline and one-of-a-kind process. The main goal of a project manager is to appropriately and effectively execute each project.

What Is a Translation Project Manager?

Within the translation industry, along with being a translator or an interpreter, becoming a translation project manager is considered another major career path. While some may assume that this position is the in-house translator, that is not the case. Graduates of our MA program earn a degree in Translation, but many are working as project managers rather than translating.

A translation project manager is someone who oversees the lifecycle of translation projects, which includes but is not limited to scheduling, organizing, and monitoring workflows. A translation project coordinator is essential to the behind the scenes work as they are ensuring that the project is being completed efficiently, while also being accurate and precise.

While working as a translation project coordinator, you may handle projects that involve translation, interpretation, proofreading, and post-editing, and the project possibilities are truly endless.

The most important thing to recognize is that translation project managers are not carrying out any translations or interpretations. The people who usually handle this are on the team that this position manages. Those team members are referred to as linguists and they are the ones who manage translation and interpretation with clients.

Overall, the coordinator or project manager is the person who is managing and maintaining the professional relationship with linguists and with clients. Building and maintaining these relationships is a key aspect of the responsibilities and process for a project manager.

Responsibilities of a Language Project Coordinator

Project management is an essential part to the translation process and the overall business as a whole. As with any other type of business, companies have their own approach in how they operate. Likewise, the responsibilities of a translation project manager may vary but overall the position encompasses the following responsibilities:

  • Overseeing and managing the entire lifecycle of each project
  • Managing the costs of the project after learning what the client needs
  • Assigning the project to a team of linguists
  • Providing assistance with the linguist and client relationship
  • Ensuring quality of the project and translation work
  • Handling approval and deliveries of projects and reports

The project manager is responsible for executing all of these responsibilities while also managing relationships. Therefore, you are able to see how important this role is and why translation project managers are an essential component of the process.
