Governor Appoints Undergraduate Student Trustee Carly Evans to 鶹Ƶ Board of Trustees

Gov. John Kasich has appointed Carly Evans to a two-year term as an undergraduate student trustee of the 鶹Ƶ Board of Trustees. Evans’ term concludes on May 16, 2018

Evans is a junior public relations major in 鶹Ƶ’s College of Communication and Information, with a minor in political science in 鶹Ƶ’s College of Arts and Sciences.

She is a member of Black United Students, a 鶹Ƶ student organization that works to serve and unify students of color. She also has served as a member of 鶹Ƶ’s Sister Circle, an initiative that aims to enrich the educational and leadership development of female students of color.

Evans is in her second year as a 鶹Ƶ Flashguide, welcoming and introducing students and their parents to the university. In her freshman year, she took part in the Provost’s Leadership Academy. As a university Peer Leader, Evans mentored students in the First-Year Experience Course and served as a Peer Leader trainer. Evans currently works with Kent Student Center Programming to coordinate and host free events for students on campus.

Evans is a 2014 graduate of Kent Roosevelt High School. She was a member of the National Honors Society and served on student council where she helped with service projects benefitting University Hospitals Portage County Medical Center in Ravenna, Ohio. She also organized food drives for homeless shelters in the city of Kent.

Evans replaces Perry “PJ” Kimmel, whose term as a student trustee recently expired.

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of 鶹Ƶ. By Ohio law, the Board is responsible for selecting and appointing the president; setting the operating budget; approving personnel appointments; granting all degrees awarded by the university, including honorary degrees; establishing tuition and fee rates; approving contracts; and approving all rules, regulations, curriculum changes, new programs and degrees of the university.

鶹Ƶ’s Board of Trustees consists of 12 members, nine of whom are voting members appointed by the governor of the state of Ohio, with the advice and consent of the state senate, to nine-year terms of office. Two student trustees, one undergraduate and one graduate, are appointed by the governor to two-year terms of office. Since 2011, the Board has appointed a national trustee, who serves a three-year term, as an additional non-voting member.

The 鶹Ƶ Board of Trustees today established a comprehensive, national search to recruit and select the university’s 13th president.

The events of May 4, 1970, placed 鶹Ƶ in an international spotlight after a student protest against the Vietnam War and the presence of the Ohio National Guard ended in tragedy with four students losing their lives and nine others being wounded. From a perspective of nearly 50 years, 鶹Ƶ remembers the tragedy and leads a contemporary discussion and understanding of how the community, nation and world can benefit from understanding the profound impact of the event.
