On July 16 2022, the existing Suicide and Crisis Lifeline will make the switch from its 1-800 number to a new and easy to remember number, 988. Now more than ever people are experiencing suicidal crisis or mental health related distress. According to SAMHSA, people are going without the care and resources they need and is the reason behind the rollout of the new Lifeline number. Starting July 16, when people call, text, or chat via the Lifeline they will be connected to local crisis centers who are there to listen, provide support, and can connect people with local resources for the crisis they may be experiencing. Services will be available in English, Spanish and translation services for over 150 languages will also be available, as well as counselors trained in Deaf and Hard of Hearing, LGBTQ+ and American Indian/Alaskan Native. Anyone who is experiencing a crisis, or who has a loved one experiencing a crisis is encouraged to call the Lifeline at 9-8-8 to get the help and support they need.
