This past Christmas season, the School of Communication Studies adopted a family through the Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties to help brighten the holiday for a family in need.
We were a part of a collective group of church groups, companies, government agencies, schools, civic organizations sports and social groups that wanted to give back to those families who are little less fortunate during the holiday season.
We are blessed to have such giving and caring faculty and staff that purchased gifts for a family in need of our support. Our Christmas tree was decorated with 50 paper ornaments, each featuring a “wish” of one of the five members in the adopted family. Our tree was overflowing with gifts including hoodies, legos, Tupperware, pillows, bed sheets, clothes, shoes and more that were sent off to the shelter to be distributed to our adopted family.
“We are totally amazed and overwhelmed by the generosity of our community to help those in need year after year through the Battered Women’s Shelter. I am sure that for some of the recipients of the gifts that were given, this was the best Christmas they have had in years,” Terri Heckman, CEO of the Battered Women’s Shelter said.
The School of Communication Studies continues to hold the generosity and caring qualities throughout the year in our offices and classrooms that really make us a collective family of students, staff and faculty. We hope to work with the Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Media Counties for future holiday seasons.
The mission of the Battered Women’s Shelter is to lead the community in the prevention of domestic abuse by providing emergency shelter, advocacy and education throughout Summit and Medina County, all in an effort to break the cycle of abuse and help promote peace in every family. The Battered Women's Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties provides emergency services and supportive services to victims seeking to end family violence. The organization helps women, men and children who are in danger of physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Unlike other agencies that focus on victims of all types of crime, the Battered Women's Shelter is the only agency in Summit and Medina Counties that focuses on family violence, intervention and prevention.
